The COVID-19 pandemic has triggered an economic crisis the scale of which has not been seen since the 1930s. with many companies fighting to sustain their business, there is intense scrutiny from policymakers, investors and the media about how they treat employees, as well as how they care about the broader environment in which they operate. A key fault line in the recovery will be whether it is back to ‘business as usual’ or will a ‘green recovery’ take hold, aligning with long-term climate objectives. Businesses may well face tremendous reputational and regulatory risks, alongside real opportunities to innovate and reform.

It seems increasingly likely companies will need to accept the reality that an ever-growing number of investors will be speaking the language of ESG – environmental, social and governance. Policymakers will need to weigh policy and regulatory measures to ensure corporate behaviour is incentivised to align with environmental and climate objectives. Corporate governance looks set to play a significant role in this area.

Please join us for a discussion with Lord Callanan, UK Minister for Climate Change and Responsibility and Victor Van Hoorn, Hume Brophy ESG lead, on Friday 26th June at 10.30am to discuss what the future policy of the UK Government may be and how it may differ from the EU approach. The session will be facilitated by Conall McDevitt, CEO of Hume Brophy and an IoD Chartered Director.

Please note that this event will be held under the Chatham House Rule.
